July 28, 2025 –The historic Carmel Mission Basilica, one of the most iconic and spiritually significant landmarks on California’s Central Coast, proudly announces the development of a comprehensive Master Property Plan in partnership with Architectural Resources Group (ARG), a nationally recognized preservation and planning firm based in San Francisco.
This forward-looking initiative marks a major milestone in the mission’s commitment to stewarding its historic buildings, sacred spaces, and cultural resources for future generations. Founded in 1771 by Saint Junípero Serra, the Carmel Mission remains a vital center for Catholic worship, community life, and California heritage.
The new Master Property Plan will guide the thoughtful preservation, restoration, and use of the 22-acre site, which includes the Basilica Church, museums, courtyards, cemetery, and other historic structures. Architectural Resources Group brings decades of expertise in working with culturally significant sites, including previous work with missions, churches, and historic campuses across the West.
This is a moment of renewal. We are embracing our responsibility to protect the sacred and historical integrity of this site, while also ensuring it can meet the evolving needs of our parish and the wider community.

The planning process will include input from parishioners, community members, preservationists, and expert restorative professionals. Priorities include seismic safety, accessibility improvements, landscape conservation, infrastructure modernization, and enhanced interpretive and visitor experiences.

Designated a National Historic Landmark, Carmel Mission Basilica is one of California’s most visited historic sites and also serves as a vibrant parish community within the Diocese of Monterey. It was the second mission founded by Saint Junípero Serra and served as his headquarters and burial place.
